Cheese Whey Draining Conveyor

This project required a bespoke draining conveyor to be designed and built to firstly replace an aging existing machine, but secondly be able to cope with in a substantial uplift in capacity of the site. The previous conveyor was also supplied by us, a mere 25 years ago, in which time it has processed over 1,300,000 tons of cheddar cheese!

The new conveyor design took elements of the original, but bought it into the 21st century with refreshed technology and an even more robust design making it ready to run for another quarter century.

A premium was placed on serviceability, reliability and cleanliness throughout the design. We worked closely with the customer through the design, build and installation phases to make sure all of their requirements on equipment types, production needs and engineering specifications were met in full.

The removal of the original machine and installation of the new machine took place within a limited shutdown period resulting in the minimal amount of downtime required to replace a core piece of equipment in the cheese process.

What was the timescale of the project?
Following the original proposal, the project has taken approximately 18 months including design, fabrication, installation, commissioning and performance signoff.

The main design elements of the conveyor, overall management of the project from start to finish, liaising with mechanical, electrical and automation contractors.
What is the most stand out design element of the conveyor?
The full width belt is a core design element. This negates the need for difficult to clean side guides within the machine. The cheese is allowed to fill the full width of the conveyor body.
What type of fieldbus is used on this conveyor?
Where possible, all devices utilise IO-link communication. This gives excellent plug and play connectivity should a device fail. It also gives us enhanced functions when compared to a hard wired instrument or valve.
